Lessons
Earth Systems (Coming)
Enter into an island world where the movement of matter by natural and industrial processes is visualized to show balances (and imbalances) of transfers. Observe how each industry utilizes its unique resources according to its area to support the needs of human beings. Consider the effects that these industries can have on the surrounding area by attending to research stations throughout the island, and identifying the effects of human development on the surrounding environment.
Grade 9 - Big Idea: The biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere are interconnected, as matter cycles and energy flows through them
Environmental Sciences 11 - Big Idea: Human practices affect the sustainability of ecosystems
Curricular Connections
Grade 5 - Big Idea: Earth materials change as they move through the rock cycle and can be used as natural resourcesGrade 9 - Big Idea: The biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere are interconnected, as matter cycles and energy flows through them

Activities
Civilization Encounters
Observe industries and resource management by different civilizations based on their location.
Data Gathering
Gather information in small groups at precisely-located research stations to identify the effects of human development.
